Almost 4000 Flights Cancelled Or Delayed As Winter Storm Slams East Coast

More than 2,000 U.S. flights have already been cancelled Monday and, more than 2,100 have been delayed as of 1 a.m. ET, according to FlightAware, tracks flight status in real-time.

The flights were cancelled because of the winter storm that hit the Midwest over the weekend and due to the shortage of airline crew members amid the omicron variant of COVID.

New year's weekend was marred by more than 5,400 flight cancellations and more than 17,000 delays within, to or from the U.S., making it the worst two-day stretch for travellers over the holiday season.

More than ever, travellers need to check their flight status before heading to the airport.

Airlines generally rebook travellers on the next available flight, but some airlines, including discounter Allegiant, that's not always the next day.

The Las Vegas-based airline doesn't operate its routes every day.

Travellers who don't want their rebooking option should reach out to the airline for other options but be ready with other flight times and routing.

As per Department of Transportation rules, travellers whose flights are cancelled by the airline are eligible for a refund, not just a future travel credit, regardless of the type of ticket purchased or the cause of the cancellation.
