On January 6, 2025, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced that he will step down, citing mounting dissatisfaction with his leadership and the recent resignation of his finance minister, which has exposed internal discord within his administration. Trudeau conceded that continuous internal struggles have led him to believe he is not the most suitable candidate for the forthcoming Canadian election.

Trudeau will continue to serve until the Liberal Party selects a new leader. Jagmeet Singh, the New Democratic Party (NDP) leader and former ally of Trudeau, has revealed his plan to propose a no-confidence motion against the Liberal government when Parliament reconvenes on January 27, 2025.
The Canadian Parliament, which was scheduled to resume on January 27, will now be suspended until March 24 to accommodate the leadership race. This delay occurs as all three main opposition parties are preparing to challenge the Liberal government with a no-confidence vote once Parliament reconvenes, indicating a likely spring election. On Monday, Trudeau declared that he is a "fighter" while addressing the various political challenges his administration has faced in recent months. He noted that, despite best efforts, the Canadian Parliament has remained "paralyzed for months" with no clear resolution.
Trudeau, who has held office since 2015, has experienced declining popularity due to various issues, including increasing living costs and immigration concerns. He has led the Liberal Party to three general election victories, achieving a majority government in 2015 and minority governments in 2019 and 2021.
Once admired for his progressive policies, Trudeau has struggled to maintain support as Canadians express growing discontent with his administration.
