Nassar, former US national gymnastics team doctor, has been sentenced to a prison term of up to 175 years for sexually abusing gymnasts. Reports indicate that he is currently in stable condition in a hospital following an attack on Sunday.

According to a prison union leader who spoke to NBC, Nassar sustained injuries including two stab wounds to the neck, two to the back, and six to the chest, resulting in a collapsed lung.

The Federal Bureau of Prisons released a statement confirming that an inmate had been assaulted at the United States Penitentiary Coleman in Florida, where Nassar is incarcerated. Prison staff promptly provided life-saving measures, and the inmate was transferred to a local hospital for further treatment and evaluation. An internal investigation has been initiated.Fortunately, no staff members or other inmates were harmed during the incident.

Nassar admitted to sexually assaulting athletes during his involvement with the USA Gymnastics program and Michigan State University, where he operated a clinic. He is also guilty of possessing child pornography.

Over 330 women and girls associated with USA Gymnastics and Michigan State University have accused Nassar of sexual abuse. Prominent Olympic gold medallists, including Simone Biles, Aly Raisman, and McKayla Maroney, have testified about their experiences surviving Nassar's abuse.

Some of the victims reported their abuse to adults, including coaches and doctors, but their claims were dismissed. A 2021 investigation into the FBI's handling of the case revealed significant failures, including delays and cover-ups, which allowed Nassar's abuse to persist for several months after the initial investigation began.

The FBI's internal review found that the agency had disregarded allegations against Nassar and made early mistakes in the investigation.

Raisman, Biles, Maroney, and other survivors of Nassar's abuse have filed a $1 billion lawsuit against the FBI for mishandling their complaints.

USA Gymnastics has agreed to pay $380 million to Nassar's victims, and Michigan State University has reached a $500 million settlement with the survivors.
